Harry Lane, superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum, 1887 to 1891

Harry Lane – physician, advocate for women’s and Native American rights, two-time mayor of Portland, Federal senator, dapper fellow and superintendent of the Oregon State Insane Asylum. He hired the first female police officer, Lola Baldwin, in the US. He also hired sculptress Alice Cooper to create Oregon’s finest statue – Sacajawea, located in Portland’s Washington Park.
