Disability Rights Oregon (DRO), Oregon’s Protection and Advocacy System for individuals with disabilities is seeking an Advocate to perform advocacy for clients with mental health diagnoses and investigation of complaints of abuse or neglect.
DRO is a non-profit law office designated by law to provide legal advocacy services to Oregonians with disabilities. DRO provides legal advice and representation, investigation of abuse, neglect and rights violations, intake and referral, outreach, training and policy advocacy. DRO has 18 staff members including attorneys, advocates, intake specialists and administrators.
This position works with DRO attorneys and advocates to:
- Conduct outreach to psychiatric facilities and other institutions;
- Investigate complaints of abuse and neglect and rights violations;
- Represent individuals to resolve complaints of rights violations;
- Provide information and training regarding consumer rights and responsibilities;
- Represent DRO at meetings and on committees.
This position requires a bachelors degree or equivalent experience, demonstrated ability to relate effectively to individuals with mental health disabilities, demonstrated investigation and dispute resolution ability, knowledge of the Oregon mental health service system, effective verbal and written communication skills, computer competency, ability to understand and communicate legal concepts, ability to assist individuals who are in crisis, self-starter who can work as a team member. Position requires frequent travel to Salem and occasionally other parts of the state. Applicants need to possess a valid Oregon driver’s license and have their own transportation.
